final article

this is my final finished article. i think everything works really well. the use of colours is good; with the 2 different colours for the questions and the answers. also taking parts out and putting them in speech marks was a good idea.

on a whole i think the article looks really interesting and would definately catch the readers attention.

final contents page

this is my final contents page. i like the overall look of it; the colour scheme and the layout. i like how the main article is seperate from everything else. i think only using one image was a good idea as it wasnt important to have any other images; the image i used is the only important one.
i also like the way contents is written; the colour of it, how it is positioned on the page and how it is not straight.

final front cover

this is my front cover. i really like how the fonts look and how they suit what the magazine is about.
i also like the colours i used, the blue black and orange go well and i have followed these colours through to the contents page and article.
overall i think my front cover looks really good and suits the all- genre magazine that it is.

developing contents page- stage 4

finally i added a box for the regulars. i wrote the regualrs in white as i wanted to seperate it from the other boxes. this makes it stand out and the readers could immediately seperate the regulars from the other new things inside.

developing contents page- stage 3

i have now filled each box with the page number and what is on that page. i chose to write it in blue with a blue outline because it really stands out from the black and can clearly be read.
i have also added the word contents, i like how it crosses the image, the orange and then the black, it also looks good at an angle. i decided to put it in a blue box as it makes it really stand out and picks out the blue from the boxes nicely.

developing contents page- stage 2

next i added an image and the story that goes with it. the reason i split the page into 2 different colours was so the main story that is in the orange section would stand out.
below the image i have written a bit about the article and then a part taken from the interview in speech marks, this is to show a bit of what was said in the article to get readers interested.

developing contents page- stage 1

first of all i made boxes to show where the writing was going to be; the blue boxes in the black section are where the pages are going; i have put the numbers in the boxes. for this page i am using a mainly black and orange colour scheme, with some parts blue.

developing article- stage 4

finally i added quotations taken from the interview, this was to show the reader a little bit of what was said so that they would want to read it. i put them in orange to make them stand out and put them at an angle so it had a "thrown on" effect.

developing article- stage 3

i then added an image, this is quite large because i decided to only use one image in the article. i put the image on an angle as the title is at an angle; this relates the title to the picture. also as the rest of the article is in boxes it breaks it up and makes it look a bit less like a typical article which was my aim.

developing article- stage 2

i then began to add the interview. i started with an introduction at the beginning. i then added the interview into the orange and white boxes. i put the questions in the white boxes and the answers in the orange boxes. i think the orange and white works really well together and it was a good idea to split the questions and answers into different colours.

developing article- stage 1

the first stage of making my article i added:
  • the title of the article
  • information about it below the title
  • the boxes where the interview will go.

i gave it a black and orange colour scheme as they work well together and i have used black and orange in the contents page and front cover.

developing front cover- stage 5

finally i added some smaller images and this is my front cover finished.
i like the colour scheme i have; blue, white and black, with some orange. this makes it look unique.
i also like the layout and the way the boxes of information stand out.

developing front cover- stage 4

now i have added the text, this is showing whats going to be inside. i chose blue for the writing because it stands out against the white and also because the image has blue in it too.

developing front cover- stage 3

now i have added my main image; this really stands out. i have also added an info bubble in the top section, this is bright orange as i wanted it to be attention grabbing.

developing front cover- stage 2

now i have added a bar code, the information along the bottom and the sound frequency graphic below the name. the sound frequency graphic seperates the name from the rest of the page.

developing front cover- stage 1

for the first part of making my front cover i made a basic layout; where images were going to be, where the writing was going and the name.

i have seperated the name into its own box as i want it to be a different colour to ensure it stands out and the 2 boxes are showing where the images will be.

article sketch

this is a basic sketch of what my article will look like; it could even change slightly from this sketch.
im going to have the name of the band i am interviewing in the top left, so the readers immediately know the point of the article.
im then going to have a few images and parts of the interview taken out and made to stand out so the readers can straight away see parts of the interview.

article images

for my article i wanted images that would link well to the story, i chose images that would have a story behind them and that looked really interesting.

all my images have more than one person in them as they look more interesting that way.

these are my article images:

i am only using 2 images on my article; a large, main one and then a smaller one.

article analysis

i analysed a magazine article to find out the techniques that magazines use to make a good article. i looked at the:

  • use of images

  • use of colours and fonts

  • layout

Article analysis

This article has used a colour scheme; this makes it unique and enables it to be recognised from what magazine it is from.
It has one large image; the main image from the article and then a smaller one, extra images from the story.
Parts of the interview have been taken out and enlarged; these are important parts that the reader would be interested in.
The font and size of the font used makes it look important. This is eye catching and would make the reader stop and read it. The font used is large and it is written in stand- out colours; red and yellow.
There is ‘news’ written across the top in red and yellow, this would suggest the article was important news that should be read.
The word ‘exclusive’ is used, this instantly makes the reader read it as it means that it is the only report on that particular thing and makes the reader think they are only going to be able to read that in this magazine.

inspiration for the contents

the inspiration for my contents page came from other magazines contents pages. it helped to see how they had done theirs as it gave me ideas.

these are the contents pages that i got inspiration from:

i like the writing on this one; the font and the sizing. also, the colours; the images go well with the colours that have been used on the font.

i like the use of images on this one; how they surround all the writing and how the images take over the page with not much writing.

contents page sketch

i did a sketch of the contents page before making it to see if it looked right and was suitable before.
its going to be uneven; no straight boxes or pictures because it gives it a funky edge.
im going to have one large picture and maybe a few smaller ones.
the main image is the one showing the article inside, i am going ot have part of the artcile in speech marks next to the image to show a bit of whats in it.

contents page fonts

the fonts on the contents page need to be the same or similar to the font that is used for the name on the front cover; this is so it can be recgonised and become unique.

i have chosen some fonts that are the same or similar to the ones i chose for the fornt cover.

these fonts are simple but funky and suit my magazine. as it is an all- genre magazine i cant have fonts that would be assosiated with a particular genre or would suit a genre, so that it why i have gone for something more simple. number 4 is the same font as my front cover and its my favourite. number 3 is quite hard to read and is my least favourite.
so out of the 4 i have chosen number 4 as my contents page font.

contents page images

i want the images on the contents page to be fun to make the readers want to read the stories.

i wont have to many images as i dont want it to be too busy.

here are the images i have chosen for my contents page:

i chose this image because it definately looks fun and i think this would draw the readers attention to that story.

this image is similar to the image above. i like the fact that it looks like it has an interesting story behind it; this will atract readers.

i like the layout of this image; its even, witht he amount of background and where the people are standing. i like that it looks like they are in motion; its an action shot.

contents analysis

i analysed other music magazine contents pages to see the following things:

  • layout.

  • colour use.

  • images.

by doing this it could help me when designing my contents page.

i analysed NME magazine's contents page:

Contents page analysis

The colour scheme has been carried through from the front cover to the contents page; the red, black and white are the only colours used. This means that looking at it you can automatically see what magazine it is from, also, this gives it uniqueness. Every magazine has a colour scheme as this is one of the things that get it recognised.
There are 3 images, these are relevant to the stories inside and are there to inform the reader of where those stories are inside the magazine. Accompanying the images are small bits of text, for example the top image has a part of the interview next to it. It is in speech marks which is how the reader can tell it is an extract from the interview. This is to give the reader something to get them interested.
The page numbers are in very large writing; this is so the reader can immediately find the page number and what’s on that page without scanning through a lot of writing. From this I know that I need to have clear bold numbering so readers can find what’s inside easily.
For two of the page information’s they have taken a word out and put a square round it, for example ‘speed’, these are words that they think will interest the readers and make them want to read that page.

inspiration

i looked at other music magazine front covers to see if i could get some ideas. by seeing what other magazines use, i can see what works and what looks best. this then gives me ideas on how i could do that on mine.

here are the covers that gave me inspiration:

the use of colours on this cover helped me decide on mine. the red, black and white looks really good and everything stands out.

i liked the layout of this cover. the use of boxes fro information and images works really well. also the main image with smaller images surrounding it helped me for my layout.

font cover draft

this is the basic sketch of my front cover.

im going to have a main image of a person; the image is quite large as i want this to stand out. the person is going to have noise written round their neck as an extra link from the person to the magazine.

the name of the magazine is going to be in dark blue/black and light blue; this will follow through to the contents and the article.

i will then have smaller images up the side; these will be images from the article. this gives people an idea of what the article is about.

there will be little boxes of information randomly placed; these will be in different shapes. they are to catch the eye of readers and are instead of having long pieces of information to read.

i will then have information running along the bottom of the page; this will just be extra information about the magazine in general.

fonts

it is important that the font suits the magazine; it needs to fit the genre.

i have chosen a few fonts that i think will suit the front cover:

i like this font because its funky and suits a music magazine. i like the black and white and the unique look to it.

i prefer this one out of the two, it looks perfect for a music magazine. i like how the letters are broken up. my colour scheme is black, orange and white so this would in with the colour scheme.
its eye catching which means it will stand out. it looks fresh which means it will help to attract young readers; my taget audience.

front cover images

these images are the ones i think will be suitable for my front cover.

i like the mood of this image; i think it suits a music magazine well as it has them walking away which looks interesting. its different as it shows them in motion which is quite fun.
i will use this on my article as it tells a story and can have a story behind it.

this is also a fun image with a story behind it; this will be my articles main image as i think when it is large it will be very eye catching and intriguing to readers.

this could be used as my front cover image; it is a close up with a fairly plain backgound. this means the person will stand out which is my aim. i can edit the image to make it more relevant to the magazine, for example, write 'noise' round her neck; this will link her to the magazine.

front cover analysis

i researched front covers from other magazines to see how they are layed, the use of images, choice of colours etc.
i chose to analyse nme;

The magazine cover has a large image which is positioned in front of everything else on the cover. This gives the image a sense of importance and shows that it will be an important part of the magazine. It is important to have a main image accompanied by an important story so there is a focus for the magazine.
There is a colour scheme; black, red, and white, these are the colours used for the name. This helps it get recognised and so people immediately know the name of it.
There are smaller images up the left hand side; these represent the stories inside, as they are smaller than the main image this indicates they aren’t as important. This allows readers to see what is inside besides the main story.
There are quotes from the stories along with the images, this gives an idea of what was talked about in the interview; a taster to the reader and to make them purchase the magazine to read it.
This magazine also has a tag line; ‘first for music news’, it is important for a magazine to have a tag line to make it unique and to make the magazine recognised by something other than its name.

Thank you for completing my questionnaire.

we then had to analyse the results;

Questionnaire analysis

From the results of my questionnaires I found that ‘Noise’ was the preferred name for my magazine. It’s important to know if your audience will like the name of the magazine as the name needs to be recognised and so needs to be strong.

When asked whether they wanted more text, more images or equal amounts of text and images, the overall feedback was that they wanted more images; this will help when constructing my article as now I know I need to feature more images. Also, I asked what was the most important thing when choosing a magazine; I found that most people chose a magazine from the image on the front, this means that when designing my front cover I need to have a strong image and not focus too much on the text.

My magazine is going to be multi genre, to make sure this was what the audience wanted I asked them; all feedback was that multi genre was the best option, as a result of this the tagline for my magazine is going to be 'a bit of everything...' this clearly indicates that the magazine has bits of everything and so potential readers will know before reading what genre of magazine it is.

My target audience will be 16- 25; this means I need to chose articles, images and stories to suit this age range. i need to keep in mind that this is a young age range and so it needs to be suitable for young readers.
